  24. <p>     THE BOTTOM LINE: Mariah Carey could be a pop-soul great; instead
  25. she has once again settled for Salieri-like mediocrity.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>     Why does a singer as talented as Mariah Carey continue to limit
  28. herself to churning out generic pop songs? Her self-titled debut
  29. displayed great promise, showcasing her gospel energy and vocal
  30. range on such hit songs as Vision of Love and Vanishing. songs
  31. as Vision of Love and Vanishing. But Carey's third full album,
  32. Music Box, seems perfunctory and almost passionless...and
  33. that raises a lot of other questions.

  90. <p>     True talent is hard to control. Prince (oras he now calls himself)
  91. alternately releases songs that are great and ones that are
  92. unlistenable. The unpredictability of true talent is one reason
  93. why Top 40 radio often prefers the talentless. They're not taking
  94. chances, so they're easier to program, easier to manipulate.
  95. To be sure, there are some great moments on Music Box. The gospel-flavored
  96. Anytime You Need a Friend demonstrates Carey's vocal power,
  97. although too fleetingly. And the title cut is one of Carey's
  98. loveliest songs to date, with her voice humming and hovering
  99. above a tinkling, childlike melody: "And your love/ breaks away
  100. the clouds surrounding me." Such moments are too rare on this
  101. release. One gets the sense that Carey is squandering her chance
  102. at greatness, a malfunctioning probe missing her target planet,
  103. spinning into pop oblivion.
